Meet the Team – Fiona Storey – Trainee Property Manager
Describe your role in one sentence at Cairn ?
I’m a trainee property manager, at the moment I’m learning as much as I can about being a PM and trying to be helpful and supportive to my colleagues whilst I learn.
What is your proudest business achievement/moment ?
I started painting again a couple of years ago, and after some encouragement from loved ones. I committed to doing my first solo exhibition in September last year. It was a really rewarding experience, although I was feeling quite vulnerable about putting my work out there. I received really positive feedback and sold most of my work. To know my paintings are hung in peoples homes to be enjoyed, made me feel very happy.
How has your industry changed in the last decade ?
Working in this industry is completely new to me, although I have had my own personal experiences in buying and selling property in the past. I haven’t seen the industry from this side of the desk!
Give us an interesting fact about yourself ?
My favourite thing to do when I have the chance is escape to the highlands, to wild camp. I love the stillness up there, to be surrounded by the hills and trees is my soul food.
What is the best piece of business advice you have been given ?
If you meet a lot of resistance with an idea or a concept, if it doesn’t flow then there is probably good reason. Letting go of your expectation, and allowing things to unfold as best you can is a valuable process.
What advice would you give your 18 year old self?
Everything works out as it should in time, don’t force things. Worrying about tomorrow only steals todays joy.
Who are your hero’s inside and outside of business ?
I think my heroes are just regular people who are able to thrive in the face of adversity. My mum is real inspiration to me, she has the most amazing ability to remain positive. I really admire her strength.
What qualities do you most admire in others ?
Patience, compassion and kindness.
How do you unwind out of work ?
I love to cook, for me it’s a really important part of the day – making a healthy dinner and sitting down with my daughter to hear all her stories. I like to practice yoga and meditation as often as I can too.
Favourite book/CD ?
I’m never off Spotify, I’m a music monster. What I listen to depends on my mood. I love artists like Ben Howard, London Grammar, Otis Reading, Aretha Franklin, The Teskey Brothers… the list is endless!
Where is your favourite place in Scotland ?
That is a tough question…I have had so many magic experiences up north. But I do return to Loch Voil in the Trossachs often. It delivers on peace and tranquillity every time… a recent trip to Mallaig also stole my heart, the white sand beaches and turquoise waters were just stunning!
