West End News: March 2017
The ever popular and vibrant West End of Glasgow shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. There’s is an even more exciting range of cultural events going on in this neck of the woods and we bring you some news from the area.
Outdoor Cinema at Kelvingrove Bandstand
Kelvingrove Park’s outdoor bandstand will soon be transformed into a cinema! This summer, the West End festival will conclude with a range of movies being shown from comedies to cult classics like Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction. Tom Jones at Kelvingrove Bandstand
Music legend Tom Jones will perform at the Glasgow Bandstand for the second year running on 5th August as part of the Summer Nights at the Bandstand line up. Tom’s gig is sadly already sold out but maybe you could keep an eye on social media for returns. Other acts gracing the stage will include KT Tunstall, Seasick Steve and Nick Lowe. Olympic Standard BMX Track
Glasgow Life, part of Glasgow City Council, are set to build an Olympic standard BMX track in Knightswood ahead of the European Cycling Championships which will be held in the city in 2018.
The track, set for completion in Spring 2018, will be the first of its kind in Glasgow, catering to cyclists of all abilities in a move to encourage more people to the sport.
Extra facilities like toilets, showers and first aid will all be available to make the site as accessible as possible.
New homes in Jordanhill
The former Jordanhill Campus, a 31-acre site, is to become a multi-million pound residential development.
Current land owners, Strathclyde University, have granted permission to Glasgow City Council and Cala Homes to build over 400 properties on the land.
Central to the proposals are the maintenance of the green space on the site as well as the historic buildings that surround it.
New Cycle Routes Planned
Glasgow saw a 6.7% increase in cycling levels across the city last year and this has inspired a new proposal for the Woodside area of the city to receive a new cycle route inspired by a Dutch scheme.
If successful, the project – known as “Woodside Mini-Holland” would include a segregated cycle route alongside St George’s Road from Charing Cross to Possil Road which would connect to the Sauchiehall Street. The cycle network into the city centre, along Great Western Road, from Maryhill and Garscube Road and the Forth and Clyde Canal would also undergo improvements.
More Affordable Housing
The West End is a property hotspot but there are calls for more affordable housing in the Hillhead area to offer more options to students on a budget and young professionals looking to get on the property ladder in this trendy area. Time will tell whether these public demands will be listened to.
