What’s Going On In Glasgow in the 2017 Festive Season?
There are a plethora of things happening during the festivities in Glasgow. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best to help you get started – hopefully, we’ll see some of you there ;)
From 9th November – 29th December the annual St. Enoch Christmas markets will descend on Glasgow bringing loads of festive food, drinks and quirky gifts throughout the season for you to enjoy. The tasty treats and perfect presents are a joy to behold for everyone young or old while you do your Christmas shopping.
Christmas Light Switch On
You know the festive season is really getting underway when Glasgow’s George Square hosts their great Christmas light switch on. On Sunday 19th November ticket holders can get wrapped up and enjoy the first family festive fun of the year as the city comes alive for winter.
Style Mile Christmas Carnival
Even the most die-hard shoppers need a break from the festive madness. Luckily on the afternoon of Sunday 26th November, you’ll be treated to an afternoon of magical music and dance in the streets to lift your spirits and see you through standing in those busy queues.
Byres Road Christmas Market
West End wendies have their own mini-market to enjoy on Vinicombe Street off Byres Road. Expect to see a giant Christmas tree, enjoy live musical entertainment and pick up baubles and cards for the Beatson Cancer Charity — show your support for local businesses over the festive period. A great one for students, families and couples alike.
Breakfast with Santa
The Hard Rock Café on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street might not be where you’d expect Santa Claus to make an appearance! Throughout December kids and adults alike can enjoy an American style buffet breakfast with the main man himself and his fabulous assistant Ellie the Elf. Discover your inner Elf
Everyone’s favourite contemporary Christmas classic will be showing at the West End’s Grosvenor cinema on Saturday 2nd December. Treat your significant other to the tickets and popcorn and finish up with a cosy walk around Ashton Lane and the West End soaking up the festive spirit with a cheeky Christmas cocktail or three.
Blessing of the Crib
If you missed the chance to see the Christmas lights turn on George Square, the blessing of the Crib is not long after on Wednesday 6th December. Bring family, friends or loved ones to enjoy the choral singers that are sure to get you feeling festive.
It’s a Wonderful Life
From the 8th December till the 22nd, the Glasgow Film Theatre is launching their annual screenings of the 1946 Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life. This is surely the perfect end to a day of Christmas shopping with your pals or a cosy date night with your partner. Don’t forget the tissues – we can’t promise you won’t cry!
What would Christmas be without a panto? This year Glasgow Quay presents a special festive panto that takes place both indoors and outdoors! Based on the classic tale of Snow White, little elves and their adults should don their winter woolies for a magical adventure.
Glasgow Santa Dash
Not afraid of a bit of cold weather? Managed to see your running habit through the balmy summer months? Love dressing up? If so, grab yourself a place in Glasgow’s 5K Santa Dash and head to the nearest fancy dress shop for your Santa costume. Applications are open now and the expected outfit is pretty much essential. Not a runner? Make sure you spectate to see a sea of Santas!
Feeling Festive With Pink Floyd
Perhaps not your standard Christmas cheer, but this year Glasgow’s Science Centre is bringing you some alternative festive fun from the 22nd-29th December in the form of a big screen showing of three of Pink Floyd’s classic albums. The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall will be played back to back alongside gorgeous visuals.
Christmas at the Drive-In
If you don’t mind travelling a bit further away for your Christmas cheer, tickets are still available for a selection of festive drive-in movies on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Enjoy Home Alone, Elf and It’s A Wonderful Life from your cosy car on the big screen.
All Day Christmas Disco Ball
Don’t let the cold weather put you off a club night. St Luke’s Glasgow is hosting an epic DJ night courtesy of Colonel Mustard and The Dijon 5 from 1PM-1AM on the 23rd December at The Winged Ox. At the time of writing, there was only 10% of tickets left so get booking.
