Cairn’s Support for Glasgow NE Food Bank

While chocolate advent calendars, indulgent food, drink, and plenty of presents are part of Christmas for some, this is not the case for everyone. In fact, 1 in 5 of the UK population live below the poverty line and Christmas is a tougher time than most for many people and families.

What we’re doing and how you can help

To do our bit to combat this, this festive period Cairn are launching a ‘reverse advent calendar’ for the 12 days running up to Christmas. We would like you to bring us your donations for Glasgow North East Food Bank and help give back this holiday season with Christmas hampers for those in need.

If you’re a student heading home for the festivities, why not empty your food cupboards of all non-perishable products like tins and dry foods and bring those not yet opened toiletries to our office to help fill some hampers.

Or, if you are able – why not go to your local supermarket and buy a few extra new supplies to donate to us when you pick up your usual weekly shop. Don’t forget to encourage all your flat mates and friends to do the same. They don’t need to live on a Cairn property!

Remember, it’s Christmas time – so although all sorts of items will be ideal those like cartons of juice, gravy granules, tins of vegetables, soup, meat and nibbles and chocolate treats will be greatly appreciated. You will make a real difference to someone’s Christmas this year.

Glasgow NE Food Bank

Glasgow North East Food Bank is supported by The Trussel Trust and works to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Based in Parkhead but with multiple of locations across Glasgow, they firmly believe that nobody in their community should have to face going hungry. Since 2013, the food bank has provided three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them. In 2016, they provided 3634 three-day emergency food supplies to people in need!

Glasgow North East Food Bank are part of a nationwide network of food banks that rely on generous donations from schools, churches, business and individuals and dedicated volunteers who sort the food that is donated and check it is in date before it is given to those in need.

Food bank clients then bring their vouchers to the bank where they are redeemed for their emergency food as well as a free hot meal and drink. The rotation of around 4000 volunteers also works to point clients in the direction of other services that can help lift them out of poverty for the long term.

The good that this food bank does to residents in Glasgow North East cannot be underestimated. One client remarked, “the food bank was there when we really needed it, it was an absolute lifeline” which just goes to show the extent of their impact.
